Annual General Meeting of Electors
Alfred Canning’s Original Drill Rig
Alfred Canning surveyed a route to bring cattle from the Kimberley Region to the Goldfields regional, a route now known as the Canning Stock Route. In a second expedition, involving 20 men, 62 camels, two horses and 400 goats (for meat and milk), they constructed the water wells along.
The Shire is in possession of one original drill rig used to construct the water wells. A grant application for the preparation of a treatment plan of this drill rig is being processed by the Shire.
The Shire is anticipating that this plan will lead to the restoration of this drilling rig, and the establishment of a visual display to provide tourist and residents alike with an interpretive view of the history of the Canning Stock Route.
